Lord Alfred Tennyson wrote in Ulysses, “I am part of all that I have met,” I think this quote personifies my grandmother, Mima, in so many ways whether it was the bagger at the commissary or the hostess at the red lobster or a random lady in a pretty dress at TJ Maxx on a Sunday afternoon… She always offered a kind smile, great laugh, or an encouraging word forever marking her part on the tapestry of those that she met. But I think the Wizard of Oz said it best to the Tinman. “A heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others.” Mima was so loved! Sadly, many of those that loved her most are already part of the celebration in Heaven. She loved a great party, and I’m certain there is a lot of (probably very loud) laughter up there while they catch up. But most importantly, she is back with the love of her life, my sweet grandfather, Dixa. They would’ve been married 70 years this year on September 21. Happy early birthday Dixa! You got the best gift… Mima is back at your side.
I want to conclude with the letter I wrote to Mima…
Dear Mima,
You were a beacon of kindness, resilience, and love, leaving an ever lasting impact on all who knew you. Your spirit was infectious, and your love for animals was boundless reflecting your compassionate nature. Your life journey was marked by strength, as you overcame the challenges of war and losing your home. Your courage and determination inspires me to face adversity with unwavering determination. You taught me the importance of being kind, loving animals, and celebrating life‘s moments with cherished friends. You taught me to ALWAYS relish in the fun. But most importantly, you taught me to take on the world with a smile.
Though you may no longer be with me in person, your love and teachings will forever be etched in my heart.
Rest in peace, Mima. You will be deeply missed, but your spirit will live on in my heart forever. I know I’ll never walk alone.
I love you to the moon and back!
Your precious little fish face,
Emily
PS… I’ll remember to eat my bish with a hork… well, maybe now it’s a cedar planked salmon with a slightly fancier fork
