John W. Moyer
God only awards us with a few best friends. I was blessed to know John as a Henry Clay shipmate and as a lifelong best friend. I thought of him as a brother. Life, as is said, isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It is about learning to dance in the rain. John danced through many challenges in life. He was a superb patriot, rising through Navy enlisted ranks and becoming a commissioned Naval Officer. Following his naval service he once again climbed a civilian nuclear power industry ladder becoming a nuclear plant manager and vice president of South Carolina Electric and Gas company.
More importantly he was married almost sixty years to his lovely bride Ruth who was his partner in life. Together they both mastered dancing in the rain. They mastered life’s challenges as husband and wife, father and mother, and as productive citizens.
One of my favorite possessions is a hand written letter which John sent to me which outlined his fears of what was happening to our country. It mirrored my thinking exactly.
My heartache of his passing is balanced as I know that his pain and suffering from long standing illness is over. Rest peaceably my brother. Save a place for me.

Dear Ruth Ann, family and friends of JW’s,
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at JW’s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow “Bubblehead” leaves on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor on the USS Sirago SS-485, USS Henry Clay SSBN-625, USS Hunley AS-31, USS Orion AS-18 and USS Frank Cable AS-40.
To our “Brother-of-the-Phin” we say, “Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas.” Thank you for your service to our country.
Ruth Ann and family… “may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you.” 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).
Jim Sandman, FTC(SS) Ret.
National Chaplain, USSVI.

John was a Great leader at Brunswick and Robinson. His voice always gained our attention. We really appreciated his no nonsense attitude on one hand and his quick wit on the other! Godspeed to you, John. You will be missed and !remembered!

When I first transferred from the Robinson Plant to the Brunswick Plant he was the Manager of Training and I was his secretary. He was a kind man with a big laugh and ran a tight ship. He always referred to his wife as "his bride". He was a good man. Prayers for Ruth and all of his family.

My very favorite picture of John! I wish that I had pictures from Ruthie and Bill’s wedding, because it is my favorite memory. I was blessed to be included in their happiness so many years ago. I take comfort in so many wonderful memories. He will be missed, and he was well loved.

I have a number of fond memories of Uncle Bill. Through them all there is one that always comes back to me and fills me with love and admiration. It is actually my very first memory of him. I was just a boy of maybe 5 years, I remember him picking me up and placing me on his shoulders. There was something in his smile and the laughter that we shared in that moment which filled me with courage and security all at once. That feeling has stuck with me to this day. He seemed to be 10 feet tall at the time and in that moment he was the biggest man in world. I wish that I would have had more time with him. Warmest thoughts to all.

John was one of those rare individuals who could be both your friend, and your leader, and clearly differentiate the two. Learned so much from him.
