I remember Joel. We always called him by his middle name. He was a great spiritual mentor to me. He was also like family to me. Joel was one of the most loving, humble and God fearing people who I have had the honor of knowing.

Go Rest Now, Man Of God
Go rest now, man of God
To a place where angels trod.
You preached the word of the Lord
For many years, taking up the sword.
To fight spiritual battles on the front line
You won the war, now everything is fine.
You were always there for people in need
With a heart full of humility, planting a seed.
Of love and faith in the spirit of God's absolute truth
Growing in your shadow through the days of my youth.
I was always involved in the ministry of the church's teens
It is still a desire that I carry, sometimes harder than it seems.
To continue on in the faith without backing down
One day I will join you in wearing a robe and crown.
I am forever thankful for your servant's humble heart
You always showed with Holy Spirit fire to never depart.
You will be greatly missed by loving family and friends
There will be a meeting in the air, eternal life never ends.
To a place where angels trod
Go rest now, man of God. (By: Jerome Terry)

I send out my deepest condolences to the Shirley family. Pastor Joel Shirley was more than just a pastor. He was part of my family too and for 12 years, he was always there for me and my family. If we were in need and there were a few times that we were, then he would do his best to help us out in any way that he could. My thoughts and prayers are with the Shirley family during this time of sorrow.
