Obituary of Jean B. McCallum

LUGOFF - Jean Benson McCallum, 92, wife of the late Lawrence Hugh McCallum, entered the loving embrace of her Lord and Savior on Sunday, December 20, 2009 following a brief illness. Born on July 16, 1917 in Mason City, Iowa, she was a daughter of the late Elmer and Mabel Mitchell Benson. Her sister, Marion Davis preceded her in death. Mrs. McCallum is survived by her beloved identical twin sister, Jane Blocher of Des Moines, Iowa; daughter, Betty Fort (Tom) of Lugoff; sons, Larry McCallum (Hazel) and Bill McCallum (Julie) all of Lugoff; grandchildren, Mac McCallum, Tommy Fort, Robert Fort, and Carson McCallum; and a great-grandchild, Logan Fort. Mrs. McCallum was a 1940 graduate of the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago, Ill., and served as a nurse in the Salvation Army at Booth Memorial Hospital in New York City and then served in the United States Navy as a Pharmacist’s Mate during WW II. After many years as a homemaker, Mrs. McCallum retrained as a Licensed Practical Nurse at the Kershaw County Vocation Center and worked for over ten years in the nursery at the Kershaw County Medical Center. Mrs. McCallum’s church home for over fifty years was the First Baptist Church of Camden where one of her recent joys was participating in the Silvertones senior choir. Mrs. McCallum claimed Philippians 3:10 as her life verse. In addition to her active church life, she played the clarinet for many years in the Camden Community Concert Band. Graveside service will be held Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. in Quaker Cemetery. Rev. Bruce Hancock will officiate. The family will receive friends Tuesday 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at Powers Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Camden, 1201 Broad Street, Camden, S.C. 29020 or a charity of one’s choice.
