LUGOFF – Funeral service to celebrate the life of Elfriede Blask Nixon, 88, will be held on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Camden. The Rev. Evan Smith will officiate. The family will receive friends on Sunday 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service in the fellowship hall of the church. Burial will be held on Monday at 12:00 p.m. in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. Mrs. Nixon passed away at home on Thursday, May 12, 2016. Born in Insterburg, Germany, following World War I, she was the daughter of the late Willie and Berta Redzus. She was married to her beloved husband, Lloyd, for nearly 62 years. They met in a blackberry patch in Munich, Germany where he was serving in the U.S. Army. Lloyd was attracted to her friendliness, intelligence and spunk. They were blessed with their son, Roland, in 1961. Upon returning to the states, she was employed at Richland Memorial Hospital from 1966-1988 as a Food Service Supervisor. She gained her “daughter,” Sheri, when she married Roland in 1984. After retiring from the hospital, she cared for both of her granddaughters and later her great granddaughters who were her pride and joy. She served as a Cub Scout leader, a mentor at Lugoff Elementary School and was a member of First Baptist Church, Camden where she was a GA Leader, prepared Wednesday evening meals and sang in the choir. She loved her Lord and demonstrated His love to others. She was truly a caregiver at heart. She always had an open door for family and friends who she loved serving home cooked German meals. She loved to garden, cook, sing in the choir and most importantly take care of her family. Surviving are her husband, Lloyd Lue Nixon, son, Roland Nixon (Sheri) of Lugoff; granddaughters, Jessica Geiger (Derrick) of Camden and Katie Nixon of Lugoff; great-granddaughters, Ella and Claire Geiger and brother, Arno, of Germany who she was reunited by the American Red Cross in 2010 after 65 years of separation. She was predeceased by a sister, Irmgard and brother Gerhard. The family extends a special thanks to her caregivers and close friends for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the American Red Cross in the hope that other families may also be reunited.
