Obituary of Paul Ariel Wood
CAMDEN - A memorial service in celebration of the life of Dr. Paul A. Wood will be held Sunday, February 4 at 4:00 p.m. at Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church. Dr. Wood, age 82, died February 2, in Camden. For fifty-four years he was the husband of Ruby Phipps Wood. Dr. Wood was the son of Rev. Paul T. Wood and Bessie Reasonover Wood. Visitation will take place after the service in the church’s Family Life Center. Interment will be private at a later date. Powers Funeral Home of Lugoff is in charge of arrangements.
Dr. Wood was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Wofford College and received his MD degree and specialty training at The Medical University of South Carolina. He practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology in Camden from 1956 through 1991 and delivered 6,840 babies. He was a Life Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was a past president of the Kershaw County Medical Society and the Kiwanis Club of Camden and a member of other professional organizations.
Dr. Wood served as a Naval Officer during World War II in the Pacific Theater.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons Rev. Dr. Paul A. Wood, Jr. of Charleston, S.C., Robert P. Wood of Columbia, S.C., and James W. Wood of Sumter; a sister, Mrs. Martha Wood Pitts of Camden; and grandchildren Will, Jane, Mary Elizabeth, Paul, and Rachel. He was predeceased by another son, Charles E. “Chip” Wood.
