Obituary of Sallie Burns Deese

CAMDEN - Funeral service for Sallie Burns Deese, 85, will be held Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Hermitage Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Condy Richardson and Rev. James P. “Jimmy” Epps, Jr. will officiate. The family will receive friends Thursday 6-8 p.m at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff. Memorials may be made to Hermitage Baptist Church Building Fund. Mrs. Deese, wife of the late Edgar Harold Deese, Sr., died Monday, June 2, 2008 in Gastonia, N.C. Born in Camden, she was a daughter of the late Harry Owen Burns, Sr. and Carrie Estil Guinn. She was an avid basketball and softball player in her youth. She was a lover of all forms of art, in her youth as a dancer and later in life as a painter. She loved gardening and anything that grew. One of her greatest joys was watching vegetables grow and flowers bloom. Mrs. Deese loved people and never met a stranger. She found the good in all people. She was an outspoken advocate of her faith and a true Christian. She was a member of Hermitage Baptist Church and the TEL Sunday School Class. Surviving are her son, Edgar Harold Deese, Jr. and his wife, Gale of Camden; daughter, Amanda Deese Haverty and her husband, Joe of Mount Holly, N.C.; sister, Frances LaFaye Williams of Camden; brothers, Patrick Guinn Burns and his wife, Betty of Camden, and H.O. Burns, Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Edgar Harold Deese, III, of Lugoff, Andrew Dendy Deese of Spartanburg, S.C., Joseph Daniel Haverty of Mount Holly, N.C., and Carrie Elizabeth Haverty of Mount Holly, N.C.; step-grandchildren, Jimmy Epps of Lugoff, Christy Epps Corbett of Camden, and Matthew Epps of Camden; sixteen great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews; and scores of extended family members. She was predeceased by her son, Jon Douglas Deese.
