Obituary of J.E. Horton

CAMDEN – Jesse Ervin Horton, Jr, 95, of Camden died Tuesday, October 20, 2015, surrounded by his family. Born November 24, 1919, on the family farm north of Camden, he was a son of the late Jesse Ervin Horton, Sr. and Rebecca Spears Horton. He is the widower of the late Sara Frances Burch Horton, with whom he shared 54 years of loving marriage until Sara’s death in 1994. In 1945, J.E. (or Jess) and Sara took over the family dairy business in 1945, initially renting the cows from his parents. J.E. and Sara operated the dairy until 1953, delivering milk, cream, and eggs to residents of Camden. In addition, J.E. operated a logging company supplying timber to Craig and Laird. He logged areas around Peckwoods and Adams Mill Pond. He ended his logging operations in 1950 when he went to work at DuPont in the power department, from which he retired in 1981. J.E. continued to farm raising beef cattle, hay, and superior tomatoes from his renowned vegetable garden. J.E. was elected to the Kershaw County Farm Service Agency Committee, serving twice as chair in 2001 and 2004. He was also a member of the Kershaw County Forest Landowners Association. J.E. was a faithful member of Camden First Baptist where he regularly attended church and Sunday school. Survivors include daughter Betty Randall Horton Slade and her husband Lawrence Erwin Slade; grandchildren Robert Horton Slade and his wife Elizabeth Lamp Slade and Laurie Slade Funderburk and her husband Harold Williams "Bill" Funderburk, Jr.; great-grandsons Slade Horton Funderburk, Jonathan Russell Slade, Matthew Thomas Slade, and Burch Hough Funderburk; sister-in-law Laura Burch Hunt; and numerous loving nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Henry Horton, Roy Horton, and Ernest Horton and sisters Mae Horton Truesdale, Pearl Horton Workman, Jessie Horton Hachadoorian, and Evelyn Horton Williams. Funeral service for J.E. will be held Monday at 11:30 a.m. at Camden First Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Bruce Hancock. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff, SC.
