Obituary of Ruby Jackson McAleer Clayton

LUGOFF – Funeral services for Ruby Jackson McAleer Clayton, 89, will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at El-Bethel Faith Community Church, with burial to follow in Hardshell Cemetery. The Rev. Joe Stines and the Rev. Billy Hughes will officiate. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6-8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to El-Bethel Ladies Ministries at 905 Longtown Rd, Lugoff SC 29078 or Hardshell Cemetery Fund at 1131 Jackson Lane, Lugoff, S.C. Mrs. Clayton, wife of the late Frank L. Clayton, Sr., passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2015, at her home of almost 70 years. Born in Camden on June 19, 1926, she was the daughter of the late James Thomas and Alice Lee “Mama” Jackson. Mrs. Clayton was the one of the five founders and charter members of El-Bethel Faith Community Church which began in the mid 50’s. She was the oldest remaining member. She graduated from Camden High School, and during the summers she worked at the Charleston Naval Base helping assemble submarines for WWII. In 1975 she became a LPN, working for Kershaw County Medical Center and Fairfield Homes, Ridgeway retiring after 14 years. Mrs. Clayton enjoyed cooking, gardening, crochet, sewing and spending time with her church family. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandsons, granddaughters, and anticipating the arrival of her first great-granddaughter. Surviving are her daughters, Brenda Yelverton (James Jr.) of Asheboro, N.C., Donna Leigh McAleer Barrett of the home; step-children, Frank Clayton, Jr. and Janice Clayton; brothers, Charles Jackson (Sandra) of Camden, Jerry Jackson (Shirley) of Lugoff, Bruce Jackson of Lugoff; sisters, Sue Pullen (Wilbert) of Lugoff, June Love (Earl) of Monroe, N.C., and Peggy Kiker of Monroe, N.C.; grandsons, Jason Yelverton (Jennifer) of Maple Valley, WA, Dr. David Yelverton of Greensboro, N.C., Stephen Yelverton (Stefanie) of Asheboro, N.C., Joel Yelverton (Jessica) of Greensboro, N.C.; great-granddaughter, Samantha Bird Yelverton; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends and extended family, Mary Lee Branham, Albert Branham, Eldora Poeta, Emily Canady, Katie Pate, Ann Hinson, and the El-Bethel Church Family. She was predeceased by her first husband of 42 years, Elmer McAleer; birthmother, Almetta “Met” Knight Threadgill; half-brother, Olin Threadgill; and half-sisters, Ruth Privette and Ann Presley of Monroe, N.C. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Tallulah Holmstrom and KershawHealth Hospice.
