Obituary of Lilla Myers
Lilla Victor Myers’ life journey began on January 26, 1916, in Savannah, Ga. and came to a peaceful end in Columbia, SC, on June 27, 2015 at the age of 99 and a half. L'dor va'dor, from generation to generation, may her name be for a blessing.
Lilla was born to Ray Basch Victor (d. Nov. 13, 1963) and Sydney S. Victor (d Jul. 12, 1973) Lilla grew up in Savannah and lived there most of her life. When she was 5 years old she and her parents lived in New York City for one year. Lilla remembered that her mother and she would get on the subway and get off wherever the notion struck them to see whatever sights were close by. They also lived in East Orange, N.J., for two years, where she remembers sledding in the winter. As an only child, she said she got all the loving and all the punishment.
Lilla went to college at the Women’s College in Greensboro, NC. She graduated in 1937 with a degree in sociology. Lilla developed a love of dance at an early age, and in her college days she performed with a college troupe. She loved dance all her life.
At the start of World War II, Lilla became a secretary at Fort Stewart, Ga. There she met her future husband, Robert (“Bob”) B. Myers (d. June 16, 1990) who was in the Army. They were married on Aug. 25, 1944. In 1945 Lilla joined Bob in Panama where he was stationed. At the war’s end they returned to Atlanta, and in 1946 they had a son, Robert (Bobby) B. Myers, Jr. Two years later they moved to Savannah, where Bob worked at Victor’s Inc., a wholesale clothing business run by Lilla’s father. In 1950 Bob and Lilla had a daughter, Cathy Victor Myers.
For the next 51 years, Lilla lived in Savannah. She raised Bobby and Cathy five days a week while Bob traveled as a salesman. She took care of her mother during her illness with breast cancer. The family were members of Congregation Mickve Israel, and for a number of years Lilla was a docent there, telling visitors about its rich history.
Lilla was a breast cancer survivor and volunteered with “Road to Recovery,” visiting with women who had breast cancer surgery to give them comfort and information.
In December 2001 Lilla moved from Savannah to Wildewood Downs in Columbia, SC, where her daughter Cathy lived. At Wildewood Downs Lilla lived an active life, participating in the many programs they offered and mentoring newcomers. For several years she served as a mentor for University of South Carolina medical students.
As an avid reader and list maker Lilla kept a notebook of the books she read. The current one starts in 1994 and ends in 2013 with over 900 entries.
Lilla was a warm and caring person who loved her familty, people and animals. She was a great friend to everyone.
Lilla is survived by her son Robert Myers (Patricia), and her daughter Cathy Myers Hancock (Jack). She is also survived by four grandchildren: Daniel Myers, Sarah Myers, Rachel Myers, and Justin Hancock. She is also survived by three great-grandchildern Zoe, Hazel, and Jasper Hancock. In Savannah she is survived by her first cousin, Dr. Irving Victor.
Lilla’s family would like to thank the staff at Wildewood Downs for their loving care of Lilla for the last 14 years.
For years Cathy and Bobby would call Lilla (“Mom”) to say good night. The call always ended with them saying “I love you Mom, hugs and kisses” and Lilla would respond “I love you, hugs and kisses.” So Mom, we love you and will miss you, hugs and kisses.
Donations in Lilla’s memory may be made to Congregation Mickve Israel or the American Cancer Society.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff, SC. A family memorial service will take place in Columbia, SC, at a future date.
