COLUMBIA - Funeral service with military honors for Richard Elco Weems, Sr., 80, will be held Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at Midway Independent Methodist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Jerry Hacker and Brian Weems will officiate. The family will receive friends Monday 6-8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff. Mr. Weems died Saturday, April 19, 2008. Born in Charlotte, Tenn., he was a son of the late Andrew Jenett and Rosa Belle Autry Weems. He retired from the United States Army after 20 years. He formerly worked for Westinghouse. He was a member of the VFW and enjoyed fishing. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Rebecca Shannon Weems; sons, Dean Weems of Lugoff, and Richard “Rick” Weems, Jr. and his wife, Nancy of Lugoff; daughter, Betty Ann Brooks and her husband, Bryan of Columbia; sister, Elizabeth Lee and her husband, Robert E. of Charlotte, Tenn.; grandchildren, Carrie Purvis, Brian Weems, Mike Weems, Samuel Weems, and Kristina Weems; and great-grandchildren, Savannah Purvis, Joe-Joe Purvis, Jr., Brianna Weems, Alyssa Weems, and Caleb Weems. He was predeceased by brothers, Robert Weems and James “Bud” Weems; and sisters, Judy Deeds and Bernice Woods.
