Obituary of Richard J. Nielsson

Dr. Richard Nielsson passed away on Friday, April 3, 2015. He was born March 31, 1943 in Amarillo, Texas. He is the son of Francis T. and Mildred S Nielsson, deceased, of Tampa, Florida. He is predeceased in death by his wife Donna Braun Nielsson. He is survived by his children and stepchildren Aric Nielsson of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; Susan Nielsson of Raleigh, North Carolina; and Donna and Andrew Wodarczyk of Lugoff, South Carolina. He is survived by his grandchildren Aric Nielsson Jr., Taylor and Alyssa Nielsson, and Kristin and Kimberly Wodarczyk, Casey Carlisi, Alexis Biesecker, and Sarah and David Bekete. Dr. Nielsson received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Auburn University in 1964 and 1966, respectively, and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Florida in June 1971, with a major in Entomology. He first worked for Del Monte Corporation in Tampa, Florida, as Entomologist and Agricultural Research Manager. In 1976, he joined American Cyanamid Company in Princeton, New Jersey, where he held various positions of increasing responsibility in agricultural chemical development and registration. In 1992, Dr. Nielsson was put in charge of International Strategic Regulatory Issues, in which capacity he served as an international liaison for the agricultural chemical industry with various UN and other international organizations. He held this position of international liaison until his retirement in October 2001, after 25-1/2 years of service. In 1993, Dr. Nielsson received the Lea Hitchener Service Award from the National Agricultural Chemicals Association, the highest recognition for service to the industry by the US agrichemical association. At the time of his retirement, Dr. Nielsson started part-time consulting work for CropLife International, based in Brussels, Belgium, and worked for them until December 2003, at which time he retired for health reasons. In 2003, he moved to Thompsons Station, Tennessee to live near his son Aric and his grandchildren. In 2012, he moved in with his step daughter Donna and her family in Lugoff, SC where he lived until his passing. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, April 9, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. The Rosary Service will be held on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home followed by visitation until 8 p.m.
