RIDGEWAY- Lt. Col. Donald Joseph Lang, Ret, 90, died peacefully on March 28, 2015 after a long illness. He was predeceased by his wife Marian Rodgers Lang; parents, Howard and Ella M Lang; brothers, Howard and Roger Lang; a sister, Elizabeth Lang; and his grandson, Kyle Sandel. He is survived by sisters, Mary Lou Mahoney and Nancy Asbill; children, Donald J. Lang, Jr. (Susan), Carol Lang Webb (Michael), Kevin J. Lang (Christy), and Lisa Lang Sandel (Billy). Mr. Lang is also survived by 5 grandchildren, David Sandel, Stephanie Judy, Joseph Prater, Peter Lang, Michael Lang; and 2 great-grandchildren, Keenan and Amberlyn Judy. Mr. Lang was born August 8, 1924. He was a lifelong aviation enthusiast. After attending CASS Aviation High School in Detroit, MI, he joined the war effort in 1942. He trained as a fighter pilot in the P40 and later the P47. He left active service in 1946, but was soon called back to active duty for the Korean War. He eventually became a training advisor to the Japanese Air Force for the U.S. After the Korean War, he was stationed at Shaw Air Force Base where he flew RF101 Voodoo. He flew two tours in the 1960’s during the Vietnam War, and then retired from the military in 1970. Over the years, he ran the Aero Club at Shaw Air Force Base, instructed hundreds of private pilots and Young Eagles, served on the Woodward Field Airport Commission, and was an active member of Quite Birdman CAE Hanger and the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Hanger at Woodward Field. He served as chair of the Wateree Homeowners Association and served on the Kershaw County Planning and Zoning Board. He had a busy and active life and his partner and sweetheart throughout was his wife Marian, who he lost in 2010. Together they traveled the world and raised a family. They enjoyed retirement on Lake Wateree where they had many friends. The family would like to thank the care shown to Mr. Lang by KerhawHealth Medical Center, KershawHealth Hospice, and the staff of Morningside Assisted Living. The family will receive visitors on Thursday, April 2 at 11:30 a.m. at Powers Funeral Home, 832 Ridgeway Rd, Lugoff, S.C., followed by a 12:30 service. Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the EAA, Chapter 1132, Camden, S.C.
