Obituary of Thomas Wilson Fort
LUGOFF – A graveside service for Thomas Wilson Fort, 66, will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Quaker Cemetery. The Rev. Doug Huntsinger will officiate. The family will receive friends Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to12:30 p.m. prior to the service at Powers Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, for foreign missions through Lugoff First Baptist Church, 106 Longtown Rd., Lugoff, S.C. 29078.
Mr. Fort passed away Wednesday, November 19, 2014. Born in Clarksville, TN, he was a son of the late Dr. George Wilson and Margaret Rye Fort. Mr. Fort received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Furman University, a Masters Degree from Clemson University, and attended post graduate classes at both the University of South Carolina and Winthrop University. He was a band instructor for 32 years, with schools in Greenville, Chester, and Gaffney. While in Greenville, he played with the Greenville Symphony.
He was a member of Lugoff First Baptist Church, the Masonic Lodge, and was a Shriner, and was a former member of the Camden Community Band. He enjoyed tree farming and camping.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Betty Jane McCallum Fort; sons, Thomas Wilson Fort, Jr. of Lugoff, George Robert Fort (Amber Cobia) of Columbia; grandchild, Logan Thomas Fort; and brothers, James Robert Fort of Sun City Center, FL, and Johnny Fort of Tampa, FL.
