Obituary of Gladys Matilda C. Pyatt
Gladys Matilda C. Pyatt, 92, wife of the late Reverend Moses Phillip Pyatt, was removed from her earthly tent on Saturday, January 04, 2025. Gladys, affectionately known as Gladiola, was born in Camden, SC on September 18, 1932 from the late Richmond Carter, Sr. and Lottie Halley Carter. At an early age, Gladys joined St. Matthew Church in Camden, SC and later became a member of Wesley United Methodist Church downtown Charleston, SC until her health failed. After graduating from Boylan-Haven-Mather Academy, she embarked on a long and successful career at the Navel Weapons Station as a civil servant in Goose Creek, SC where she eventually retired. Concurrently, Gladys served as one of Wesley’s primary musicians, playing the organ and piano and singing in the choir. Gladys also extended her musicianship to the Golden Band of Wesley UMC of Ladson, SC. Other organizations or places of business Gladys was diligently involved in include: Eastern Star Alcott Chapter #321, Voters Registration office in Charleston, SC, and the United Methodist Women Association. Outside of her service, Gladys loved being with her family, furry friends, cooking, gardening, and teaching children at Wesley’s annual vacation Bible school. Gladys’ was acknowledged in Wesley’s Women’s History Month due to her numerous achievements and meaningful service in the church and Charleston community.
Left to cherish her memories is her son, Rev. George Kenneth Carter of Columbia, SC; sister, Hester Moye of NY; brother, Albert “Juicy” Carter of Camden, SC; grandchildren, Kenneth Avon Carter (Trisha) of Baltimore, MA, and Hope Johnson (Adrian) of Macon, GA; great-grandchildren, Jessica and Kameron Johnson of Macon, GA, and Kennedy Bonnafon (Reggie) of Louisville, KY; nieces, Alice Pyatt of Charleston, SC, and Gwendolyn P. Marion (Benjamin) of NY; great-great-grandchildren, Blue and Ace Bonnafon of Louisville, KY; former daughter-in-law, Henrietta Macon (James) of Columbia, SC, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
She was predeceased by her siblings, Ethel C. Dunham, Richmond Carter, Jr., Dorothy C. Williams, Mary “Millie” Brown, Thomas Carter, Nathan Carter, Elease Cooke, Lottie C. Nickens, Clifton Carter, Margaret C. Engram, and Irene Coleman.
A funeral service honoring the life of Ms. Pyatt will be held Friday, January 10, 2025 at 11:00 AM. The service will be held at St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Camden, SC. Public viewings will be held Thursday, January 9th, 2025 from 2:30 to 5 at Powers Funeral Home and an hour prior to the funeral service in the church on Friday.
