Obituary of Willie E. Winburn

ELGIN - Reverend Willie Edward (Billy) Winburn, 85, of Elgin, SC, passed away on August 12, 2014 at home. Mr. Winburn was born April 11, 1929 to Sam and Anna Harrell Winburn in Chesterfield, SC. He was an employee of Sonoco in Hartsville for 20 years. He then answered the call to become a minister and served as Pastor of Spring Branch Baptist Church in Hartsville, SC, Sawney’s Creek Baptist Church in Ridgeway, SC, Bethlehem Baptist Church in Batesburg, SC, Antioch Baptist Church in Camden, SC, Collins Creek Baptist Church in Murrells Inlet, SC, Faith Baptist Church in Bishopville, SC, and served as interim pastor at Shamrock Baptist Church in Bethune, SC, Midway Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach, SC, Pleasant Meadow Baptist Church in Loris, SC, and Carolina Baptist Church in Green Sea, SC until his retirement in 2006. He was an active member of Friendship Baptist in Lugoff, SC until his health declined. His integrity, strength, wisdom, and sense of humor endeared him to his congregations and many loved ones. He helped many people along life’s journey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Dorothy Watkins (and Earl), Martha Blackwell (and John), Margaret Atkinson (and R.C.), Thelma West (and Charles), and his brother, Tommy Winburn; and his brother-in-law Belah Smith (and Rachel). He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 65 years, Valerie, and three children, Bill Winburn (Regina) Mint Hill, NC, Joyce Smith (John) Columbia, SC, and Judy Branham, Myrtle Beach, SC. He was “Papa” to five grandchildren, Jennifer Dinkins, Chapin, SC, Carla Owens (Jason) Palm Coast, Fl, Nathan Winburn (Amanda), Indian Trail, NC, Lauren Tate (Josh), Chapin, SC, and Emily Winburn, Charlotte, NC, and six great-grandchildren, Lexi, Jaxon, Riley, Sean, Hannah, and Jaycee. He is also survived by brothers Allen Winburn (Patricia) of Bishopville, SC, Johnny Winburn (Ruby) of Cassatt, SC; sister Betty Turner (Barnice) of Cheraw, SC; brother-in-law Al Smith (Portia) of Bishopville, SC; and sisters-in-law, Catherine Johnson (Hebron) of Camden, SC, and Jean Hopkins (Don) of Lugoff, SC; and many nieces and nephews. He was loved dearly by all. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, 832 Ridgeway Road, Lugoff, SC 29078. Funeral will be held on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church, 1056 Hwy. 1 South, Lugoff, SC 29078, with Rev. Matt Galloway and Rev. Mark Hopkins officiating. Burial will be held in the Gum Branch Baptist Church cemetery, 1504 Clyde Road, Hartsville, SC, 29550, following the funeral. The family would like to thank Ally Christison, Janie Johnson, Megan Quigsley, Brian Ogburn and the entire team of Kershaw Hospice, and neighbor Craig Tucker for their care and support.
