CASSATT – A funeral service for (Ret.) Command Sergeant Major John Paul Layne, 88, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 pm at Powers Funeral Home with burial to follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1-2 pm at the funeral home.

Mr. Layne passed away on Saturday, November 2, 2024. Born in Williamson, W.V., he was a son of the late Thomas and Hazel Layne. Mr. Layne retired from the U.S. Army. Affectionately known as “Pop,” he enjoyed fishing and watching westerns.

Surviving are his children, Rick Layne (Shelia) of Fayetteville, N.C., Teresa Wray of Columbus, GA; partner of 30 years, Ola Mae Williams; step-children, Connie Sue Sirovica (Scott), Sharla Shirey (Edward); sister, Denise Layne of TN; mother of his 2 children, Dorothy Layne; 10 grandchildren, including his best friend and sidekick, Dustin Mitchell; and 7 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by grandchild, Jennifer “Jenny Lenny” Wray; step-son, Johnny Williams; step-grandchild, Nicholas Reed; and siblings, Frida, Frank, Lydia, Barbara and Thomas.
