Obituary of Richard F. Wagner

LUGOFF, SOUTH CAROLINA – Richard Frazier Wagner’s battle against renal cell carcinoma ended at home Thursday, July 24, 2014. Born March 9, 1942, his family resided in Concordia, KS, until 1958 when they moved to Topeka. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1960, enlisted in the US Marine Corps, transferred to the US Army and served for over 20 years, retiring in 1981 as MSG. He completed two tours in Viet Nam, and numerous assignments throughout the US, Europe and Korea. Following active duty retirement, he held numerous positions as a federal servant, retiring in 1995 as Deputy, Training Operations Management Activity, HQ Training and Doctrine Command, Ft Monroe, VA. He accumulated numerous awards and decorations during his combined years of service, including two purple hearts and the Bronze Star, the Superior Civilian Service Award, and the Meritorious Civilian Service award. In April 1996, he and his wife, Mary, moved to SC. Rich was a member of St John’s United Methodist Church, Camden-Lugoff Elks Lodge (Past Exalted Ruler), SC Purple Heart Association, and American Legion Post 195. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Ferd and Ila (Frazier) Wagner, and a brother, Robert Wagner. Surviving are his wife of 23 years, Mary (Seiveno-Whitaker), children Todd F. Wagner (Amanda) of Hampton, VA, Kevin M. Wagner (Lauren) of Williamsburg, VA, Paige Wagner Herman (Todd) of Waynesville, NC, and their mother, Hilde; Scott Whitaker (Sandy) of Elgin, SC, and Douglas Whitaker (Darlene Dollar) of Yorktown, VA.; grandchildren are Kalyn Roberts, Gresham Wagner, Brayden Whitaker, Christian Wagner, Britton Whitaker, Tripp Whitaker, Jesse Dollar, and Gianna Whitaker; a brother, Jon Wagner (Doris), resides in Riverview, FL; and brother-in-law, Gene Seiveno (Gerilynn), Sumter, SC. Visitation will be at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff, on Wednesday, July 30, from 6 to 8 P.M. Camden-Lugoff Elks Lodge will conduct a special ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Services will be at St John’s United Methodist Church, Lugoff, at 11:30 A.M. Thursday, followed by internment at 1:00 P.M. in Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
