Obituary of Althea Garrison

LEXINGTON – Althea Floyd Garrison, 90, formerly of Georgetown, S.C., died Saturday, July 12, 2014, in Columbia. She will be buried on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. in Lake City Memorial Park, Lake City, S.C. A memorial service to honor her life will be held at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church in Georgetown on a day and time in August to be determined. The family will receive friends there prior to the service at the church. Mrs. Garrison, wife of Joseph Edward Ray Garrison, was born on January 23, 1924, in Scranton, S.C. She was the daughter of the late Marcus O’Shay and Mattie Hutchinson Floyd. She is survived by her sons, Joseph Edward (Ed) Garrison of Lugoff, and William O’Shay (Shay) Garrison and daughter-in-law, Patricia of Lexington; a granddaughter, Courtney Ann; and grandson, Christopher O’Shay, both of Lexington. Other survivors include numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Luther O’Neal Floyd. Mrs. Garrison was a 1946 graduate of Winthrop College and taught in elementary schools in Florence County, McIntosh County, GA and Georgetown County, where she retired after teaching third grade at Maryville Elementary School for more than 15 years. She was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church and faithful participant in the Francis Asbury Sunday School Class. She was also a devoted volunteer with Helping Hands of Georgetown. Mrs. Garrison spent most of her young adult life enthusiastically taking on the roles of Cub Scout Den mother, Pack leader, Little League mom, Sunday School teacher, grade parent, PTA and Vacation Bible School leaders for her sons before resuming her teaching career. She was an enthusiastic fan and follower of Clemson Tiger and Georgia Bulldog football and enjoyed needlepoint, crocheting, gardening and cooking. The family suggests in lieu of flowers that memorials may be made in Mrs. Garrison’s memory to Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church or Helping Hands of Georgetown. The family would like to express a special thank you to the staffs of Morningside Assisted Living in Georgetown, Wildewood Downs Long-term Skilled Nursing facility in Columbia and Palmetto Health Hospice for the love and kindness provided to Mrs. Garrison.
