Obituary of GySgt. Robert Lee Vaughn (Ret.)

GySgt. Robert Lee Vaughn (Ret.), 74, of Lugoff, SC and formerly of Texas, passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2024. Born in Beeville, TX, he was the son of the late Harry Lee Vaughn, Sr. and Margarita A. Vaughn and the husband of over 50 years to Sara Baker Vaughn. Robert faithfully served in the United States Marine Corp for over 20 years, eventually retiring after two tours in Vietnam and being awarded two Purple Hearts. After his military service, Robert worked for the SC Department of Corrections, before again retiring and pursuing a career as a truck driver for Miller Lumber Company. He enjoyed traveling, camping, and watching old westerns. Robert was an avid sports fan and loved cheering on the Atlanta Braves and the Dallas Cowboys. His family described him best as a ‘grumpy old man with a big heart.” Above all, Robert was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother who cherished spending time with his family. “A proud Marine never dies, he just fades away.”

In addition to his loving wife, Robert is survived by his children, Robert Lee Vaughn, II (Joanne) and Sara Nicole Perry (Michael); his grandchildren, Josh Hall (Jenni), Chesnee Dow, and Jordan Vaughn; great-grandchildren, Savannah Hall, Cameron Dow, and Nyomi Dow; his siblings, Maryann Shaw, Ruby Updyke, Richard Vaughn (Tommi), and Sandra Vaughn (Danny); his sister-in-law, Judy Vaughn; brothers-in-law, George M. Baker, Bruce Baker, and Ronnie Baker; as well as numerous other close family members in Texas.

In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his brother, Harry Lee Vaughn, Jr.; and sister, Debbie Garcia.
