Obituary of Dwight Maples
CAMDEN – A celebration of life service for Dr. Dwight Elkins Maples, 86, will be held Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. The Rev. Todd Horton will officiate. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Sunday from 3:00-4:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be held on Monday, June 30, 2014, in Spring Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, Fair Bluff, S.C. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Boy Scouts of America, Indian Waters Council at 715 Betsy Dr., Columbia SC 29210.
Dr. Maples passed away Sunday, June 22, 2014. Born in Rockingham, N.C., he was a son of the late William Hardy and Dora McCumbiee Maples. An all-star football player with Rockingham High School, he received a scholarship to play football at Appalachian State University where he received his Bachelors of Science and Master’s Degree. He taught in the public school system in Central Florida where he also coached football. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
After retirement from teaching, Dr. Maples moved to South Carolina and received his Doctor of Chiropractic from Sherman College in Spartanburg. He was the former owner of Wateree Chiropractic in Lugoff and Kershaw.
Dr. Maples was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Williston, FL Lodge and a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 17.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Rebecca Anderson Maples; son, Dr. Durham Russell Maples of Camden; daughters, Dr. Dina Maples Blankenship (Terry) of Lugoff and Dr. Melanie Maples Begly of St. Matthews; and grandchildren, Zachary Elliott Begly, Benjamin Maples Blankenship, William Anderson Blankenship and Austin Gabriel Begly.
