Obituary of Donald Neil Carter, Sr.
Donald Neil Carter, Sr., 76, passed away on Monday, February 12, 2024. Born in Queens, NY on September 28, 1947, he was the son of the late Thomas Moses and Rosalie Nickens Carter. Mr. Carter was a Strategic airlift maintenance super-intendent for five years and an aircraft maintenance technician for 17 years in the United States Airforce for over 23 years before retiring in September of 1989 . Through his military service Mr. Carter was awarded a service award ribbon with four oak leaf clusters, NCO professional military education graduate ribbon with one oak leaf cluster, small arms expert marksmanship ribbon, AF training ribbon, republic of Vietnam gallantry cross with palm and republic of Vietnam campaign medal. Mr. Carter was a faithful member of the St. Matthews United Methodist Church in Camden, SC. He enjoyed figuring out how things work and playing and watching sports.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Helen Jean Sanders Carter; son, Donald N. Carter, Jr of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Deondre Carter (Ellie), V’dell Carter and Chloe Carter; great-grandchild, Hayden Carter; three God children, Nicole Harris, Matthew Carter and Sarah Williams; three sisters-in-law, Annie Carter of Sacramento, CA, Marion Laster (Chris) of Miami, FL, and Susan Smith (Kermit) of Bowie, MD; brothers-in-law, George Sanders, Jr. and Ronnie Sanders, both of Miami, FL; one uncle, Albert Carter of Camden, SC; and two aunts, Hester Moye of New York, and Gladys Pyatt of Columbia, SC; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents Mr. Carter was predeceased by his brothers, Thomas Moses Carter, Jr. and Richmond Carter.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church in Camden, with burial to follow service in Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 20, 2024 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. The Rev. Jerry Dicks, Rev. George K. Carter and Rev. Millie Nelson Smith will be officiating.
