Obituary of Otto Esslinger

Otto Esslinger, 92, of Elgin, passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. Born in Beresina, Bessarabia, he was the son of the late Gottlob and Maria Rieger Esslinger and the husband of Margaret Zacour. Otto was a lifetime member of Living Springs Lutheran Church in Columbia. He was a US Army veteran who served during the Korean War and was a lifetime member of the American Legion. Otto was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed being in nature, searching for semi-precious stones and gems, and working in his yard. He loved dancing and attending the German Club meetings in Columbia. Otto also had a heart for children and animals and cherished spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, Otto is survived by his daughter Jean and her husband Jack; his chosen family, Eric, Kurt, Peggy, and Douglas; his grandson, Benjamin; two sisters, one brother, and numerous other family members and close friends. 

In addition to his parents, Otto was preceded in death by his first wife, Genevieve; and his two brothers.

Memorial Services will be held at 10:00am on Monday, January 29, 2024 at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, Columbia.
