Sean Michael O'Brian Obituary

Sean Michael O’Brian, 58, passed away Thursday, December 28, 2023 peacefully at home surrounded by family. Born December 25, 1965, in Lexington, KY, he was the son of Patrick Michael O’Brian and Sharon Ann Varney. Mr. O’Brian was a Master Sergeant in the United States Army for 20 years before retiring in 2003. During his time with the Army he was awarded five Army Commendation Medals, two Bronze Stars, a Civilian Commendation Medal, a Combat Infantry Badge, two Commanders Awards for Civilian Service, Drill Sergeant Badge, four Meritorious Service Medals, a Order of Saint Maurice, Ranger Tab and Superior Civilian Service Award. He graduated from War College in 2013 with his Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies. He enjoyed reading, collecting firearms, gardening, fishing, and any military/war memorabilia.




Surviving are his wife, of 30 years, Kathleen Marie O’Brian; sons, Evan Patrick O’Brian (Alexis) and Ethan Michael O’Brian; parents, Patrick O’Brian and Sharon Varney (Conrad); sister, Erin Lucero (Bernie), grandchildren, Cayson Patrick O’Brian and Henry Layton O’Brian; uncle, Rick Weidman (Andy); mother-in-law, Sheila Duncan; father-in-law, Glenn Duncan; numerous extended family; and cat, Fred O’Brian.




Graveside service will be held on Friday, January 5, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or a Humane Society of one’s choice.
