Obituary of Barbara McCallum

KINGWOOD, TX- Winola Barbara Vanscoy McCallum, 94, of Kingwood, Texas departed this life late Saturday night, May 17, 2014 at Vitas Hospice in The Woodlands, Texas. Mrs. McCallum was born on December 31, 1919 in Baltimore City, Maryland, the daughter of the late Boyd Vanscoy and Essie Harper Vanscoy. Barbara was predeceased in death by husband Covert Salters McCallum of Lugoff, South Carolina. She is survived by her daughter, Marguerite Eisen (Philip); grandchildren, James Donnen, Anna Anderwald, Christine Godfrey and Joseph Donnen; and her great-grandchildren, Storm Webb, Ian Donnen, Brendon Godfrey, Andrew Donnen and Logan Anderwald; and by her niece, Marina Kadry. Mrs. McCallum was a graduate of Elkins High School and Davis & Elkins College with a degree in Business. She was a Civilian Federal Government employee, working for the Department of the US Air Force. She worked for the US Air Force in the Directorate of Budget and retired from her career as the liaison between the US Congress and the US Air Force helping to write legislation. Barbara’s career spanned over 30 years. She also served on the Board of Correction for the US Air Force. Barbara was awarded numerous citations and rewards for her tireless effort while working for the US Air Force. Barbara retired in 1976 to take care of her ill aunt, Donna Geyer. She returned to Elkins in 1992 to enjoy her retirement. She loved to read and be with family. Mrs. McCallum will be cremated by McNutt Funeral Home in Conroe, Texas. As she requested her remains will be laid to rest next to her husband, Covert, at Quaker Cemetery in Camden, South Carolina. The service will be held grave side at Quaker Cemetery on June 21, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the COPD Foundation in her name: http://www.copdfoundation.org. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Cornerstone Hospital and to Vitas Hospice. A special ‘thank you’ to Houston Extended Care of Kingwood, Texas who provided Barbara with excellent care, support and comfort. Barbara will remain in our hearts forever.
