Obituary of Owen J. Young

ELGIN – Funeral service with military honors for Owen Jefferson Young, 81, will be held on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff, with burial to follow in Fort Jackson National Cemetery.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff.  Memorials may be made to Theil-Meyer Pet Adoption Center.

Mr. Young passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2023 at MUSC Florence surrounded by his family.  Born in Gambrills, Md., he was the son of the late Owen Jefferson Young and Eva Pack Thompson.  He retired from the United States Army as a First Sergeant after serving two tours in Vietnam.  He was a master trim carpenter and enjoyed woodworking.  Mr. Young also enjoyed camping and spending time in the West Virginia Mountains with his family, friends and his two dogs, Lucky and Kilo.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Idella C. Mitchell Young; daughters, Anita Christine Young of Lugoff and Paula Young Potter (John) of Elgin; grandchildren, Jared Sinclair, Spencer Sinclair, Hannah Potter and Owen Potter; and two half-sisters, Marie O’Donnell and Darlene Mitchell of West Virginia.  He was predeceased by a son, Owen Jefferson Young, Jr.; a sister, Margaret Austin; and 1 half sister and 1 half brother.
