Obituary of Dorothy H. Johnson

CAMDEN – A service to celebrate the life of Dorothy Hancock Johnson, 95, will be held on Sunday, February 12, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. First Baptist Church in Camden with burial to follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.   The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 pm in the church Fellowship Center. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in Camden or a charity of one’s choice.

    Mrs. Johnson, wife of the late Hugh Aaron Johnson, passed on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at NHC Lexington.  Born and raised in Springfield, TN, she was the daughter of the late Floyd Sylvester and Nellie Pope Hancock.  She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Camden where she was former director of WMU’s, GA’s, sang in the Silvertones Choir, was a member of the handbell choir and the Fiber Fanatics Group.  She was also former director of the Kershaw Baptist Association WMU’s and a former member of the Kirkwood Garden Club and officer of the Precipice Hill Home Owners Association.

    Mrs. Johnson was gifted in many areas of needlework, among them sewing, cross-stitch and knitting. She especially loved to knit and gift Prayer Cloths to family and friends. She was generous in sharing hand-knitted baby blankets with parents of newborns. She was always up to play a board game or a game of cards. She remained involved in numerous church activities throughout her entire line.

    Surviving are her children, Glenn Johnson (Merlileen) of Denver, N.C., Patty Popp (Don) of Doylestown, Ohio, Sylvia Wessinger of Lexington, S.C., and Debbie Dowling (Drew) of Concord, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.  She was predeceased by twin brother, Don Hancock; siblings, Floyd Pope Hancock, Linnie Belle Edwards, A.D. Hancock, Robert Hancock, John Hancock and Jessie Hunter; and son-in-law, Paul Wessinger.
