Obituary of Rev. John Willie Gunter, Jr.

Rev. John Willie Gunter Jr., Buddy to his friends, 82, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 18, 2022, at home surrounded by his family.  Born in Winnsboro, he was the son of the late John Willie Gunter Sr. and Doris Drawdy Gunter.  He served in the United States Navy for four years.  He retired as a sales consultant for Cardinal Color.  He was a charter member of Faith Church of the Nazarene in Lugoff where he was a former associate pastor.  He was a strong man of faith and prayer.

Mr. Gunter loved the lake and enjoyed fishing, hunting and working in the yard.  He was a devoted husband and father and adored his grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife of 23 years but committed to each other for 30 years, Libby Ballard Gunter; son, Michael Dean Gunter (Felecia); daughters, Kathy Diane Smith (James) and Stephanie Hope Seibles (James); step-children, Bradford Lamar Starr and Mikayla Debra Leonard; brother, Keith Gunter (Peggy); 8 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Karla Jane Gunter; and sister, Theresa Ebo.

He also had a special group of friends that he played football with at Mt. Zion Institute of Winnsboro where they won the 1958 South Carolina State Championship.

A service to celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. at Faith Church of the Nazerene in Lugoff.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Quilts of Valor (www.GOVF.org).
