Obituary of Gabriel Girard Smullen

And the peace of God which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

Gabriel Girard Smullen was born on September 22, 1980, in Camden, South Carolina, to the late Avery Smullen and the late Gladys Roach Smullen. He went to be with the Lord on October 10, 2022 as a result of complications from surgery at MUSC Health (Providence Heart Center).

Gabriel received his primary education in the public schools of Kershaw County and his formal education from Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina with studies in Sociology.  His true passion was cooking and working in the restaurant industry. He also enjoyed video games, drawing, and spending time with his nephews. He was affectionately known by many in the community and will be very much missed.

Gabriel had a great sense of humor and enjoyed being around positive people. He loved the Lord and accepted the Lord as his Savior at a very early age. He often called his sisters and nephews to say that he loved them and was so proud of them. Every Mother’s Day, Gabriel would buy a card for his deceased mother because he loved her so much. Gabriel had a special way of looking at life.

Gabriel leaves to cherish his memories his loving maternal grandmother, Willie Mae (Mable) Roach of Lugoff, SC; sisters, Kelly Smullen of Lugoff, SC, and Kim (Reggie) Harris of Ridgeway, SC; nephews, Brandon and Jaylon Harris of Ridgeway, SC, and Cam’ron and Na’sir Tracy of Florence, SC; a niece, Miss Azalee Harris; his aunts, Carolyn B. Roach of Columbia, SC and Brenda (David) Reed of Ridgeway, SC; an uncle, Curtis (Vera) Roach of Lugoff, SC; one special aunt, Eva Mae Harris; as well as a host of cousins, other relatives, and friends.

Gabriel was preceded in death by his loving mother, Gladys Roach Smullen; father, Avery Smullen; maternal grandfather, John Wesley Roach, Sr.; his aunt, Shirley Belton; and uncle, John Wesley Roach, Jr.

The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff. Graveside Services will be held at 1:00pm on Sunday, October 16, 2022, at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery, Lugoff.
