Obituary of Joe E. McConnaughhay

ELGIN-Joe Earvle McConnaughhay, 89 of Elgin, died peacefully Thursday, August 4, 2022.  He was born in Canalou, Missouri, to the late Johnny Earvle and Vianna Jane Bennett McConnaughhay. Joe was predeceased by his beloved wife, Shirley Ann McFalls McConnaughhay. He was a member of Smyrna United Methodist Church. 

    Joe served in the U.S. Army for 27 years, retiring as an E8 First Sergeant. Following his retirement from the Army, he worked at Fort Jackson at Moncrief Hospital for 13 years. He loved his boys and grandchildren. Joe spent many hours outdoors. Fishing was one of his favorite pass times, along with gardening.

    Joe is survived by his son, Larry McConnaughhay (Christen) of Batesburg; grandchildren, Adam McConnaughhay (Susana) of Colombia, SC., Lara M. McEachern (Maxwell) of Columbia, Elizabeth M. Roe (Jacob) of Myrtle Beach, Jacob Ring (Kaylin) of Chapin, and Zachery Lynch (Autumn) of Columbia; great-grandchildren, Callaway Roe and Stone Ring; and brothers, Clifton McConnaughhay and Jimmy McConnaughhay (Donna).

    In addition to his wife and parents, Joe was predeceased by a beloved son, Billy McConnaughhay; beloved brother, Jerry McConnaughhay; and a beloved sister, Joy Elder.

    The family will receive friends at Smyrna Method Church on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, from 9:00-10:00 a.m. prior to the service. A service to celebrate Joe’s life will be held 10:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary of Smyrna United Methodist Church, Elgin, with burial will follow in Greenhaven Memorial Gardens, Elgin, SC.
