Obituary of Dennis Neil Atkinson
LUGOFF – A service to celebrate the life of Dennis Neil Atkinson, 73, will be held on Friday, November 12, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. at St. John’s United Methodist Church with burial to follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Camden. The Rev. Angela Marshall will officiate. The family will receive friends Thursday, November 11, 2021 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Lugoff Fire Department Explorer Program or St. John’s United Methodist Church Salkehatchie/Carol Cooke.
Mr. Atkinson passed at home on Monday, November 8, 2021 surrounded by his family. Born in Camden, he was the son of the late Leo Vernon and Martha Loraine Jackson Atkinson. He served in the United States Air Force and served in the Vietnam War. He retired from DuPont and was a volunteer fireman with Lugoff Fire Department for 23 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 17 and enjoyed wood working and camping.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Nancy Anderson Atkinson; daughters, Melissa Wilson (Tick) of Lugoff, Crystal Breedlove (Walt) of Lugoff, and Amanda Raper (Shea) of Lugoff; sisters, Kathy Guilds (Johnny) of Sumter and Sharon Stephens (Robbie) of Gadsden, Ala.; 7 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild. He was predeceased by a brother, Lavon Atkinson.
