ELGIN – Funeral services for John Richard Hornsby, 84, will be held Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. at Union Baptist Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Jerry Lewis will officiate. The family will receive friend Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Union Baptist Church, or a Church of one’s choice. Mr. Hornsby passed away February 1, 2014. Born in Elgin, he was a son of the late Joe T. and Elizabeth Branham Hornsby. Mr. Hornsby had two wives that loved him very dearly, the late Bessie McKenzie Miles “Becky” Hornsby, and Sarah Jackson Hornsby. He was a member of Union Baptist Church, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, singing, dancing, and helping others. Surviving are his wife, Sarah Jackson Hornsby; step-children, Kathy Johnson (Donnie), Felder McCoy, Wayne McCoy (Frances), Sandra Truesdale (Joe), and Claude McCoy (Shonda); 13 step grandchildren; 7 step great-grandchildren; and a sister, Josephine Nelson (Don). He was predeceased by his first wife, Bessie McKenzie “Becky” Hornsby; step-daughter, Fay “Missy” Massebau; brother, Woodrow Hornsby, and sisters, Eleree Hartman and Thelma Nelson.
