My wife, Pat, met Shelba on a Baptist Wives Retreat while stationed in Hawaii. They became instant friends and Bill and I became friends also. We spent a lot of time together enjoying the Islands. On a trip to Maui we planned a trip to visit the volcano. We packed a lunch of cheese and fruit. As we started down the mountain we pulled into a roadside picnic area and realized that cheese and fruit may not be enough. A family there was packing up to leave and had hotdogs on the grill. To Pat's horrow, I asked "Are y'all going to leave those hotdogs?" They said, "Help yourself". Then to Shelba's horrow, Bill said, "That potato salad sure looks good!". They again said for us to help ourselves. Then as we started to eat the ladies both said "Pass the hotdogs and potato salad!"
On a more serious occasion, Shelba's true nature was demonstrated. We had just returned to Hawaii from being on emergency leave to the states due to the illness of Pat's Mother. We had no more than returned home when a call came that her mother had returned to the hospital. We didn't see how we could return to the States. As we were struggling with what to do, a knock came on our door. Bill and Shelba were there with boxes of KFC. Shelba spent time comforting Pat. I don't remember much else about that visit, but we have never forgotten her kindness.
Shelba, know that you are loved and will always have a special place in our hearts. Pat and Ron Porter
