Obituary of Mark Gainey

D. Mark Gainey, 59, of West Columbia and formerly of Lugoff, passed away on Friday, September 17, 2021. Born in Hartsville, SC, he was the son of Doris Walden Gainey and the late Dores Gainey and the husband of Sarah Hewitt Gainey.

In addition to his wife, Mark is survived by his children, Daniel Mark Gainey (Zuliebeth), Sarah Gainey Boatwright (Scott), Marah Gainey Copeland (Grant), Drew Hix, Landon Hix, and Caroline Hix; his siblings, Jeffrey Gainey (Susan), Karen Gainey, Janet Hewitt (Byron), and Beverly Cassady (Tony); grandchildren, Mirielle Gainey, Nolan Boatwright, Daniel Mason Gainey, Millie Copeland, and his grandson on the way, Asher Boatwright; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

In addition to his father, Mark was preceded in death by his brother, Travis Gainey.

Mark was a hard worker, the family comedian, and would always go out of his way to help someone. He never met a stranger and loved boating with the family, golfing and watching Clemson Football. His favorites nights of the week included dinner out with his brother, Jeffro.  “Pops” loved nothing more than showing off pictures and videos of the grands.

The family will receive friends Monday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, in Lugoff.  A service to celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in Quaker Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or AMVETS National Service Foundation.
