ELGIN – A celebration of life service for Dorothy Smith Free, 95, formerly of Summerville, S.C., will be held Saturday, June 5, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. at Bethany United Methodist Church, Spell Chapel, in Summerville, S.C., with burial to follow in Manning Cemetery, Manning, S.C. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethany UMC at 118 West Third South St, Summerville, S.C. 29483 or Meals on Wheels of Summerville, 316 W Carolina Ave, Summerville, SC 29483.
Mrs. Free, wife of the late Henry “Jack” Free, passed away Wednesday, June 02, 2021. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Cary and Bessie Davis Smith. Mrs. Free was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church and the Searchers Sunday School Class. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed sewing, dancing and playing bridge.
Surviving are her daughters, Beth Van Fossen (Jerry) of Clinton, TN, Dale Williams (Tom) of Salisbury N.C., and Jackie DeWitt (Bill) of Lugoff, S.C.; sister, Judy Atkinson (Dixie) of Jacksonville, Al; grandchildren, Keith Van Fossen (Renee), Shelley Noel (Gary), Jeri Fisher (David), Laura Jacobi (Curt), Richard Williams; and great-grandchildren, Sydney Van Fossen, Megan Van Fossen, Rachel Fisher, Madelynn Fisher, Katie Owens (John Andrew), Drew Noel, Cole Jacobi, Cameron Jacobi, and Natalie Williams. She was predeceased by a brother, Tomy Smith.
