Obituary of Edward James Scott

LUGOFF – Funeral service for Edward James Scott, 74, will be held on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. 

Mr. Edward James Scott of Lugoff, S.C. departed this life at his residence Wednesday, May 12, 2021 taking flight to his resting place.

Edward J. Scott known as Hawk and Big Johnson to many, was born May 16, 1946 to his parents Joe Wiley Scott Sr. and Annie Bell Goodwin Scott.  Edward was the 7th child to this family union.  He grew up in a spiritual home led by his mother Ms. Annie Bell Scott.  Edward worked the farm, along with other sisters and brothers, plowing, attending to farm animals, gardening the fields and other farm work. He attended public schools in Kershaw County.

Later as a young adult Edward left S.C. and moved to High Point, North Carolina.  There he worked and lived for many years. During the 70’s Edward moved back to Lugoff and began working in the lumbering industry.  He rejoined Mrs. Annie Bell and his younger siblings and resumed everyday farm chores. Hunting and fishing became his hobbies along with playing baseball with community teams.  Edward later worked construction and became a skilled carpenter and the community specialist in repairing water wells and pumps. He was called by many for that knowledge and skill. 

Edward was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Wiley Scott Sr. and Annie Bell Scott and siblings, Theodore, Lawrence, Lillie Mae, Willie James, Leo, Johnny, Hazel, Joe Wiley, Juanita, Christine and Peggie Ann. 

Edward leaves to cherish his memories and celebrate his homegoing, Linda A. Woods a very special and beloved companion of 23 years, two stepsons, Timothy B. Woods and Melvin C. Murphy, one adopted daughter Stephanie M. Woods, one brother, Terry (Gail) Scott of Columbia, SC., one sister, Josephine Manning (Jene)Williams of Maxton, NC., one special aunt, Etta Pearl Kirkland of Lugoff, SC., brothers-in-law, Mack, Jimmy, Rickey, Charles, Jene, Walter, Henry and Eric; sisters-in-law, Willie Mae, Iola, Beverly, Ruby Joe, Nellie, Gail, Grace, Mary and Margaret and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Also left to cherish his memory, his dog, Chico.
