Obituary of Robert S. Hathaway

COLUMBIA – Robert S. “Bob” Hathaway, 87, formerly of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on Monday, November 18, 2013 in Columbia, S.C. Born on June 4, 1926, he was the son of the late Raymond E. and Edna F. Hathaway. Bob was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, Violet Rose Harble Hathaway; sons, Robert Michael Hathaway and Mark Hathaway; brothers, John E. Hathaway and James C. Hathaway; and sister, Ruth Edna Hathaway. Bob served in the United States Navy during WW II, having served in the South Pacific. He was a retired captain with thirty years of service in the Columbus Ohio Fire Department. Bob was a member of York Lodge of Mason for over fifty years, a lifetime member of VFW and a member of The Living Springs Lutheran Church. He was an avid golfer and especially proud of his volunteer work with The South Carolina Golf Association. He is survived by his son, Thomas S. “Tom” Hathaway (Mary); one grandson, Scott Hathaway (Zetta); and two great-grandsons, Brandon and Austin, all of Lugoff. Funeral service will be held on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, with the Rev. Eric E. Fink officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Committal service with military honors will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. in Fort Jackson National Cemetery where Bob will be laid to rest beside his beloved Rosie. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Muscular Dystrophy Association, 2700 Middleburg Dr., Columbia, S.C. 29204 or The South Carolina Junior Golf Association, P.O. Box 286, Irmo, S.C. 29063.
