Obituary of Col. Horace E. Wood

LUGOFF –Col. Horace E. Wood, Jr., United States Air Force (Ret) passed on to the care of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, peacefully and surrounded by his family, on 05 November, 2013. Col. Wood was the son of Horace E. Wood, and Amy Bell Norris Wood, of Seneca, South Carolina. Horace graduated from Emory University, and went on to have a distinguished Air Force career that exceeded 30 years, serving as a B-29, B-57, and C-130 flight crew member in both the Korean and Vietnam wars, while flying 197 combat support missions between the two theaters. Following his flying career, Col. Wood worked at the Pentagon serving the Secretary of the Air Force, and later, as a Congressional Legislative Liaison, officer. Prior to retirement, Col. Wood was Director of USAF Intelligence, Military Airlift Command, HQ. Col. Wood has received numerous awards, including the Distinguished Flying Cross (with Valor), Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (with 18 Oak Leaf Clusters), Air Force Commendation Medal, Legion of Merit, as well as other military unit citations and service awards. In retirement, Horace cherished his time spent with family and friends. His passions included serving in the Kershaw Co. Gideon’s camp, being a member of the A-Model club, golf, and hanging out in their NC mountain cabin. He was a man that loved, and was sincerely loved, by his family and friends. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Barbara Thompson Wood; children Lee Wood, Paul (Michelle) Wood, Edith Wood; and 6 grandchildren. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 3:00 pm in Highlands Memorial Park, Highlands, NC. The reverend Bill Slattery will officiate. The family will receive friends Friday, from 5-7 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Wounded Warriors, Gideons International, or the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter.
