Obituary of Peggy Ann Duncan

Peggy Ann Duncan passed from this world in her sleep October 17, 2019. She was sixty years old. Peggy was born to Marvin Orvel (Corky) Duncan and Mary Ellen Ware (Polly) Duncan on July 20, 1959, in Robstown, Texas. Peggy had Down Syndrome but had a loving place in the Duncan family. She was teased, tackled, pampered, and protected like any baby sister. She developed a delightful personality. She was loyal to family, friends, and her sports team. Peggy had a competitive spirit and represented South Carolina well in the 1974 International Special Olympics where she brought home a gold medal in bowling. Subsequently, she represented South Carolina for 2 years on the women’s basketball team at the International Special Olympics.

Peggy’s father died when Peggy was 3 and Polly moved her four children home to Greenville, SC.  Peggy attended public schools and later a sheltered workshop at Piedmont Skills. Her favorite job was working at Dispoz-o in Fountain Inn, SC where she measured out the precise quantity of plastic forks, spoon, and knives then taped the packing box.

 Peggy loved attending summer camps at Camp Spearhead and Camp Joy and she loved all of the volunteers and professionals who made those camping experiences possible.  At the camp talent shows, Peggy was very confident that she was the “best singer.”

Peggy enjoyed watching Disney Junior, the Weather Channel, sports, and Steve Harvey, going to the movies with family, and going on cruises. She loved her longtime Sunday school teachers at First Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Ruth Ann Webster and Kelly Lee, and later the Joy Sunday School class at the First Baptist Church of Camden, which was lovingly taught by Mrs. Patsy Waters, Mrs. Dorothy S. (Dot) Newman, and Rodney (dec) and Shaun Trapp.

Peggy was her mother’s “handy helper” as Polly grew in need of more physical assistance.  After the passing of her mother, Peggy came to Lugoff, South Carolina, to live with her sister, Judy, and her husband, Charles. Peggy was especially appreciative of her special friend, Ashton Huckabee, who would come home from Presbyterian College and take Peggy to proms, bowling, pizza outings and to meet the Gamecock basketball team.

Her family is appreciative of caregivers Rachel Gillespie, Leslie McCaa, Nicole Glee, and Johnny Mae McKenzie who helped with Peggy after dementia slowly stole her wit and a stroke debilitated her. Peggy received the loving support and assistance from friends Anne R. Harmon and Martha S. Clarke.

Peggy is survived by her siblings Judy Carol Duncan Baxley (Charles), Tom Marvin Duncan (Kim), and Larry Charles Duncan (Nikki). Peggy was kind and gentle with children and loved her nieces B. Caroline Chambers (Geoffrey), Brittany L. Whitlock (Josh), and Emily C. Faulkner (Josh), and her nephew Heath Duncan. She was predeceased by her nephew Burke M. W. Baxley. Peggy is also survived by her grand-nephews and grand-nieces: Isaac Swafford, Eva Faulkner, Annie Reese and Jacks Whitlock, and Skye and River Chambers.

Peggy’s gift to her family of love, laughter and loyalty will be missed. The family will receive visitors at 403 Holly Berry Lane in Lugoff Sunday, October 20 from 2pm – 5pm.

A graveside memorial service will be held for Peggy Duncan Tuesday, October 22 at 3pm at Woodlawn Memorial Park on Wade Hampton Blvd. in Greenville, SC.

She was blessed with the trait of loyalty and possessed a great social awareness. Peggy’s social conscious was reflected in her selecting her candidate; she identified as a “Pulbican.” She was a fan of whatever college team whomever she was around liked. You could always depend on Peggy to have on her Clemson Tiger shirt, her Gamecock shirt, her North Carolina Tar heel shirt, or her Mississippi State shirt, to try and not offend whomever she was with; however, in her heart she was a Gamecock fan.  If you made a friend of Peggy, you had a friend forever. She had the amazing ability to remember many dozens of people’s birthdays; birthdays were very important to her.

Peggy was especially fond of the men in her life: her next-door neighbor in Greenville, Gaines Huguley (Austin), George Gibson of FitnessZone in Lugoff, Steve Gogos of the Lugoff House of Pizza and Subs, and George Tokkis of the Spice Diner in Simpsonville, SC, along with her “favorite” brothers, Tom and Larry, and her “favorite” brother-in-law, Charles.
