Obituary of Richard S. Davis
QUINCY, FL - Richard Spayne Davis was born in Camden, S.C. on December 18, 1929 and went to his eternal home Tuesday, October 1, 2013. Richard celebrated 63 years of marriage with Barbara Joan Godwin Davis, known by her family and friends as Bobbie Jo and rejoiced in the birth of two daughters, Barbara Kathryn Kay Davis Peddie (Buddy) and Karen Aleah Davis Miller (Edward).
He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Laura King (Jason), Amy McCann, Aliya Peddie (Jonathan), Luke Miller (Cynthia) and Sarah Roman; and 8 great-grandchildren, Ethan Tramel, Kacie King, Deven Peddie, Riley McCann, Elyse Peddie, Macen McCann, Blake Roman and Bella Miller. He also blessed the lives of adopted children, Charles and Jessica Bailey; friends, Martha Jane and Walter Edwards, Gloria and Bill Shuey.
Mr. Davis served in the U.S. Army for 25 years reaching the rank of Command Sergeant Major before retiring in 1970. After retiring from the military, he returned to FSU, earning a double degree then served as a civil servant in the U.S. Treasury Department until his retirement in 1999.
Mr. Davis served as a deacon at First Baptist Church, Chairman of Deacons, counting committee member, Sunday School teacher, Training Union Director as well as many other areas.
Mr. Davis served the Lord through the Gideon International Ministries as camp president and all other areas of ministry.
He is predeceased by his parents Zada Mildred Shirley Davis and Clennie Eldridge Davis; brothers, Kinnard, Jack (Aline Watts Davis), C.E. and Margaret Davis, Mack and Bettye Gayle Davis, Ted and Geri Davis and Wayne and Pearline Davis.
Funeral service with full military honors will be held Sunday, October 6, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Hermitage Baptist Church with burial to follow in Quaker Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday 6-8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff.
