Obituary of Don A. Powell
COLUMBIA - A Celebration of Life Service for Dr. Donnie Ashmore Powell, 73, will be held Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be made to the Treasure’s Acquisition Program, Rare Books c/o Elizabeth Suddeth University of South Carolina Library Development, 1322 Green Street, Columbia, S.C. 29208.
Dr. Powell died Thursday, November 17, 2011. Born in Spartanburg, S.C., he was the son of the late Russell Kermit and Mignon Cox Powell. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree and Master of Arts Degree from the University of South Carolina. He received a Doctor of Philosophy from Florida State University and had a year's fellowship at Florida State University.
Dr. Powell retired after 41 years from the Dorn VA Medical Center where he was Director of Neuroscience Lab and served as Associate Chief of Staff for Research and Development. He was Adjunct Professor at the University of South Carolina and mentored many students in the field of Neuroscience.
He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Trisha Burke Powell; sons, Dr. D. Langston Powell (Marilyn Gartley) of Columbia, and Ashley Powell (Margaret) of Greensboro, N.C.; daughters, Palmyra Powell (Steve Merlin) of Columbia, S.C. and Stephanie Powell-Barilla (Paul) of Columbia, S.C.; step-daughters, Tammy Watson (Chris) of Aiken, S.C. and Teresa Powers (Robbie) of Lugoff; brothers, Kenneth Powell (Wilma) and Ronnie Powell; sister, Barbara Lemay (Bob); grandchildren, Evelyn Powell, Langston Barilla, Logan Barilla, Zoe Barilla, Louis Watson, Mary Margaret Watson, Natalie Watson, Gabrielle Powers, and Allen Powers. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Palmyra Ramsey Langston and second wife, Dr. Shirley Buchanan.
