Obituary of Harriett V. Walker
CAMDEN - Services to celebrate the life of Harriett Vincent Walker of Camden, formally of Kershaw, SC will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at Lakeview Baptist Church. The Rev. Hugh McKinney will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. A private burial will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park at 2:00 p.m., prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mrs. Walker’s memory to Lakeview Baptist Church, 1520 Mill Street, Camden, SC 29020 or to Second Baptist Church, 7737 Kershaw Camden Hwy., Kershaw, SC, 29067. Powers Funeral Home in Lugoff is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Walker, widow of Floyd Walker died on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at the McLeod Hospice House in Florence, SC. She was born in the Buffalo community of Kershaw, SC on Nov.8, 1923 to Pet Catoe Vincent and Leonard R. Vincent. She was employed by springs Mills in Kershaw for over 20 years prior to getting her cosmetology license at the Camden School of Cosmetology in 1971. She opened a beauty shop in her home where she loyally served her customers for almost 30 years. She was a long time member of Second Baptist Church in Kershaw where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. After moving to Camden in 2001, Harriett joined Lakeview Baptist Church where she continued singing in the choir. She loved walking, working in her yard, reading her devotionals and Bible, and following Clemson sports.
Her life was one of self-sacrifice and dedication to her family and to her church. Her inspirational life will be missed by those who loved her and who will cherish the memory of her loving spirit and infectious smile.
Surviving are her sons, Wayne Walker and his wife Ellen of Florence and Doug Walker and his wife Johnnie of Camden; grandchildren, Greg Walker, Todd Walker, Chad Walker, Ryan Christian, and Sally Tucker; 9 great-grandchildren; brothers, David (Naomi) Vincent, John (Edith) Vincent, Bruce (Ann) Vincent, and Clarence (Nancy) Vincent; and a sister, Catherine Davis. She was predeceased by brothers, LJ Vincent, Curtis Vincent, Frank Vincent, RL Vincent; and a sister, Eva Mae Gardner.
Pallbearers will be Greg Walker, Todd Walker, Chad Walker, Don Christian, Bryson Tucker, and Chris Davis.
The family would like to express our appreciation to Jay and Katherine Vinson and to Alice Washington for their special gift of love, friendship, and encouragement given to Harriett and to the McLeod Hospice House for their loving care.
The family will be at the home of Doug and Johnnie Walker, 1908 Carriage House Lane, Camden.
