Obituary of Robin Grant Fleming

CAMDEN – Robin Grant Fleming, son of the late Harold George and Phyllis Marjorie (Coldicott) Fleming, was called home on July 3, 2013 after a six month battle with lung cancer. Born on June 27, 1942 at the foot of the Himalayas in Thandiani, India, Robin’s compelling life spanned over four continents. Robin completed a five year apprenticeship in aviation engineering at Vickers Armstrong (Aircraft) Ltd. in Weybridge, UK. On a VC-10 test flight to South Africa in 1964 he met the love of his life, Margaret Esme Usher, to whom he was married for 37 years until her death in 2003. An expert in industrial fan engineering, Robin retired from Howden after 42 years of service. Robin’s passion for flying began as a young boy, building and flying radio controlled planes. For the past ten years he was a glider pilot and instructor at Bermuda High Soaring in Jefferson, SC. He was also a member of the Soaring Society of America and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Assoc. He held a SC state record in soaring and earned several FAI badges, including his Diamond Badge in March 2012. Robin will be remembered for his loyal, gracious, affable nature, his integrity and positivity. He was enthusiastic and driven, but never at the expense of others; grateful and blessed for – in his words - his “incredible life” which he attributed to the grace and faithfulness of Jesus Christ with whom he had a vital relationship. Robin leaves behind his sisters, Phyllis Mary Saunderson (UK) and Ruth Lewis (Australia); sons, Grant Fleming of Brooks, GA; Bruce Fleming and his wife Karina of Moscow, Russia; and daughter Karin LaMontagne and her husband James of South Hadley, MA.; and six grandsons: Maxim, Ardis, Liam, Christopher, John and David. A service in celebration of Robin’s life will be held on Saturday, August 10 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Camden, SC. Pastor Bruce Hancock will officiate. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Robin’s memory may be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. The family is most appreciative of the many friends who have supported Robin and his family during his illness, as well as the compassionate staff at Hospice Care of Tri County Camden – Jackie, Sara and Tarsha.
