Obituary of Jack D. Ray

LUGOFF - The Celebration of Life Service for Jack D. Ray, Sr., 79, will be held Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John United Methodist Church with burial to follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Rev. John Mims will officiate. The family will receive friends Tuesday 6-8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. Mr. Ray died Monday, February 8, 2010. Born in Lugoff, he was a son of the late Ben Team and Nannie Jackson Ray. He retired from DuPont after 35 years. A local musician and song writer, he hosted the 1960’s morning radio show, “Jack Ray and The Snowmen”. The band recorded the “Ballad of the Wateree” and “Ballad of the Swamp Fox”. Mr. Ray was a charter member of the Lugoff Optimist Club and served as past President and District Lieutenant Governor. He was a Mason and a member of the Jamil Shrine. Surviving are his wife of 25 years, Vicki Ellen Ray; son, Jack D. Ray, Jr. and his wife, Shauna of Lugoff; daughters, Dianne R. Wingate and her husband, Jerry of Rock Hill, Jackie R. Shaw and her husband, Dale of Lincolnton, N.C., Esther R. Houlihan and her husband, John of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and Janet R. Ivey and her husband, Denis of Charleston, S.C.; step-sons and their wives, Billy and Paige Way, and Dennis and Brenda Way, all of Columbia; son-in-law, Mickey Peake of Rock Hill; sister, Myrtle Hancock of Darlington; brother, Wayne Ray of Sumter; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Willie M. Ray; daughter, Allyson Ray; 3 brothers; and 3 sisters. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. John United Methodist Church Children’s Fellowship or Lugoff Optimist Club.
