Obituary of Marvin Joseph Shirley

CAMDEN-Funeral service for Marvin Joseph Shirley, 87, will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Camden, with burial to follow in Quaker Cemetery. Rev. Bruce Hancock will officiate. The family will receive friends Friday 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Powers Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to The Arise and Build Fund at First Baptist Church, Camden. Mr. Shirley died Tuesday, April 14, 2009 after a brief illness. Born in Camden, he was a son of the late Foy Spayne and Jessie Moore Shirley. A WW II veteran, he served in the United States Army 101st Battalion Signal Corp in the invasion of the Philippines, and the invasion of Okinawa. Mr. Shirley retired from Skyline Manufacturing and was owner of Shirley’s Radio and T.V. Service. He was a life long member of First Baptist Church, Camden. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Grace Watkins Shirley; daughters, Patty Bair of Camden, and Fonda (Dick) Bohr of Columbia; sons, Kenn Shirley of Richmond, Va., and Keith (Teresa) Shirley of Davidson, N.C.; brothers, Ralph (Louise) Shirley of Columbia, and Homer (Beatrice) Shirley of Elgin; sister, Agnes Sinclair of Camden and Frances Cameron of Camden; grandchildren, Kyle Miller, Ryan Miller, Haley Dougherty, Megan Stephenson, Benjamin Shirley, and Daniel Shirley; and great-grandchildren, Jack Dougherty, Grace Dougherty, Ellie Stephenson, Carter Stephenson, Aili Miller, and Camden Miller. He was predeceased by brother, Ansel Shirley; and sisters, Zada Davis Morris, Verda Sullivan, and Mabel Ayers.
