Obituary of Herman Brown
LUGOFF - Graveside service for Herman Henderson “Sonny” Brown II, 70, will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery, Friendfield, S.C. Rev. Scott Peterson will officiate and the Camden Military Band will accompany. The family will receive friends Wednesday 5-7 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 647 Lachicotte Road, Lugoff, S.C. 29078.
Mr. Brown died Monday, February 26, 2007, having been diagnosed with cancer in June 2004. Born in Friendfield on April 19, 1936, he was the grandson of the late Arthur W. and Leila Poston Brown and the son of the late Herman H. Brown and Lenore Collins Brown Glenn. On his maternal side, he was the grandson of Maxie Carlton and Ophelia Matthews Collins.
Having received his grammar education in Friendfield School, Mr. Brown was a graduate of Pamplico High School “1953”. Thereafter, he attended Clemson College and later the University of South Carolina where he earned a Bachelors of Arts Degree in political science and a Master of Arts Degree in secondary English education. After an eight year teaching career beginning in Wampee, S.C, and ending in Santa Barbara, Calif., he achieved success in health insurance and real estate over the next twenty years. In 1989, he decided to return to his first love, teaching, and secured a position as adjunct English instructor in Midlands Technical College in 1989, leaving in 1991 to become an English instructor on the faculty of Camden Military Academy.
Mr. Brown became a Lieutenant Colonel on the faculty and English Department Head until he retired from that position in 2004. He continued with CMA as yearbook advisor, staff photographer, and general purpose editor until his death. In 2006, Camden Military Academy dedicated its yearbook to Lt. Col. Brown.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Corbett Poteat Brown; step-son, William Poteat, Jr.; sister, Barbara Brown McConnell Parrish of Clover, S.C.; nephew, W. Walter McConnell, III of Lake Wylie; and niece, Lyn McConnell Harper of Lake Wylie.
