Obituary of Willis U. Arthur
Pineville, NC - Willis U. Arthur, Jr., formerly of Camden, SC passed away April 27, 2013. He was born November 13, 1925, in Aiken, SC to Willis Uriah Arthur, Sr. and Iva Lee Redd Taylor Arthur as the youngest of eleven siblings. After serving in the US Army Air Corps during World War II, Willis graduated from the University of SC with a mechanical engineering degree. He spent his entire career with DuPont starting at the Savannah River Plant in Aiken and then the May Plant in Camden.
Willis was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Camden for over 40 years, especially enjoying his time as a member of the church choir. He was a member of the American Legion and a Past Master of the George Walton Masonic Lodge in Augusta, Ga. Nothing gave him more joy than helping friends and family fix anything mechanical and being a devoted caretaker in later years for Emily, his wife of 64 years.
Willis is survived by his wife Emily of Camden, his son Randy and wife Jane and grandchildren Abby and Jake, all of Charlotte, NC, and granddaughter Hilary Arthur of Asheville, NC. He was preceded in death by his daughter Kristina and all of his siblings.
The funeral will be held at First Baptist Church of Camden at 11 am on Tuesday, April 30. Powers Funeral Home of Lugoff is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to First Baptist Church of Camden or the Alzheimer’s Association.
Mr. Arthur had severe Alzheimer’s and required care at a different facility than Emily, his wife of 64 years, and their heartbreaking separation 6 months ago is a distant memory to her. Due to her health and mental condition, the family has decided not to burden her with the news of his passing and respectfully asks that anyone contacting her honor this decision and not offer condolences or discussion of his passing, but simply offer her love and friendship. Thank you.
