Obituary of Lowell Rudolph Wilson
Mr. Wilson passed away peacefully on August 10, 2018. Born on July 31, 1921 in Lynchburg, SC, he was the son of late Jesse N. Wilson, Sr. and Jessie Allen Wilson. Mr. Wilson was a member of Lugoff First Baptist Church and a faithful member of the Hilton Reynolds Sunday School Class. He enjoyed traveling this country, working on cars in his early years, and family gatherings. He celebrated his 97th birthday recently with his family and spent time with his 5th generation great-great grandchild.
Mr. Wilson joined the Air Force in 1942 and served honorably in the 306th Bomber Group during WWII. He was stationed in England where he met and married his wife, Joan, on January 15, 1944. He participated in the Central Europe Air Offensive Campaign earning 2 citations; a bronze star and a silver star for service. He retired from E. I. du Pont de Nemours Company in 1985. He was one of our Nation’s “Greatest Generation”. He was a member of American Legion Post 144 in Lynchburg for over 65 years and recognized as the longest living member. A long life well lived.
He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Annie Joan Keens Wilson; daughters, Jo Ann Wilson Hanks (Dwight), Jeanette Wilson Elliott, and Joyce Wilson Outlaw; grandchildren, Jennifer Thomas (RJ), Rhett Elliott and Nikki Stokes (Pete); great-grandchildren, Hunter McManus (Amelia) and Brittany McManus; great-great-grandchild, Myles Elliott McManus. He was predeceased by siblings, Alma Wilson Floyd, Cecil Wilson, Gerald Wilson, D.C. Wilson, and J.N. Wilson.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at Lugoff First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends 1hr hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow the service at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lugoff First Baptist Church Sound System fund.
