I just learned of Mrs. Rochester's passing today and extend my sympathy to her family. I met her when she signed a copy of her book for me at the SCMMGA Symposium. I spoke to her again in subsequent years, only for a few minutes at a time, yet I feel such a loss at her passing. Each time I read a passage in her book, I feel as if she is taking me on a personal tour of her garden, sharing insight and advice along the way. She was such a blessing.

I never met Mrs. Rochester but her gardening articles in the Chronicle were so rewarding to me & I learned so much. As a resident of Colorado from Camden the past 33 years I used so many of her suggestions to bring a little southern touches to my western home garden. She is missed & will always be remembered for the gracious person she was.
Mr. Rochester & family, my prayers are with you!

Dear Dick and your family,
The gardening world especially on Ocracoke has lost a very special lady. Margot taught my mom how to coax vegetables and herbs from the sandy ground here and during the process became a fast and dear friend. It was always such a treat to see Margot and her dazzling smile in more recent years and to be at her book signings. My mom would have been so pleased for her success as a published author.
Fowler O'Neal called me with the sad news of Margot's passing-he and Chloe are joining me in sending this message of condolence and gratitude for the pure joy of having Margot in our lives for all of these years. I expect that she and Hettie are already collaborating on new planting ideas up there in the ultimate garden.
With love and sympathy,

Mrs. Rochester taught me in 1970-1971 at Camden High School. I had her for English V during my senior year and still remember so many of the interesting things we did in there. As an English teacher today (still at CHS), I feel that she is one of several inspirations I had in my younger years.
My condolences to the family and to all of the many people she influenced.

Margot was one of the souls in this world who have the gift of finding joy everywhere and who leave it behind them when they go. Just another Master Gardener friend who knows full well that her feet left an impression in the dirt here on earth, her laugh and learning an impression on our hearts; and that she will be preparing a heavenly garden, while she awaits the rest of us to join her. To her family, peace be with you.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Margot. She was a very special person in so many hearts, mine included. May she find peace, love, and joy in the greatest garden of them all. And may God shed a special light on her as he takes her home.
Her love of life, gardening, and the magic of her words touched so many hearts and minds, regardless of color, creed, or socioeconomic standing. Her life was a blessing and standard by which we have all benefited.
Although I can't be there during the visitation and funeral (terrible, terrible cold), I am with you in heart and spirit.
May God bless you all and help you through this difficult time. I lost my husband to pancreatic cancer in July (Margot was here for that) and my brother to it the previous Sept. so I do understand your loss and grief. I offer my deepest heartfelt sympathy to Mr. Rochester, Tommy (Tom) and Dan and their families. Please know you all remain in my prayers and heart.
Mrs. Rochester inspired my love for reading and writing. I credit her with "planting" these loves. Our relationship began circa 1975 but over the years we somehow remained in touch, (no accidents) running into each other, emailing and finally sharing the love of gardening. She was indeed a special lady... leaving many seeds of love, knowledge humor and hope with so many people. She brightened the room when she walked in! She will always be remembered as a tremendous educator and friend.

Margot was one of the most inspirational, affectionate and encouraging people I've ever met. She freely shared her gardening knowledge with those who wanted to continue gardening but were restricted by their disabilities. And, she did it enthusiastically by patiently answering each and every question in an encouraging, fun and positive way. She provided a huge and loving service to patients of Palmetto Health Richland's Total Joint Center. Margot was someone we valued as a dearly treasured friend. She leaves a unique void that cannot be filled. In addition to our staff, we know she leaves many heart-broken friends and family. You have our deepest and heart-felt sympathies. God bless you all.

During my years as Margot’s student at L-E, she created a lifelong love of reading, writing and the English language, for which I will always be grateful. She did this with vast knowledge, keen wit and a genuine concern for all of her students. Had every student been fortunate enough to have had Doc Roc, I can say with confidence that no child would have ever been left behind. I feel even more fortunate to have grown from being her student to becoming her friend. As incredible a teacher as she was, she was an even more wonderful friend. Even though I have not been in her classroom for over 20 years, I never stopped learning from her about the kind of person I would like to be. My prayers stay with her family and her chums.
