Obituary of Mary Beth Vinson Nelson

ELGIN – Funeral services for Mary Beth Vinson Nelson, 85, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Tommy Huddleston and the Rev. Ken Jackson will officiate. The family will receive friends Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. Mrs. Nelson, wife of the late David E. Nelson, passed away Saturday, February 24, 2018. Born in Lancaster County, she was a daughter of the late William Perry and Nannie Elizabeth Bradley Vinson. Mrs. Nelson was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. She was very active in the church serving on many committees including the Food and Fellowship, Flower, Shower, and the Senior Adult Committees. She also taught Sunday School and served as Vacation Bible School Director in the past. She was a talented musician playing the guitar and dulcimer and sang in the choir. Mrs. Nelson was also a member of the Spring Valley “Valley Voices” and she and Mr. Nelson were avid Clemson fans and loved traveling to the games and tailgating. She enjoyed cooking, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends. Surviving are her daughter, Deborah Morris (Jack) of Elgin; son, D. Michael “Mike” Nelson (Lynn) of Elgin; grandsons, Seth and Zachary Nelson; brother, David Vinson (Ann) of Westville; and sisters, Ruth Graham of Camden, Magdalene Twitty of Lexington, Esther Deese of West Columbia, Martha Mabry (Ben) of West Columbia and Rachel Clyburn (Bennie) of Camden. She was predeceased by brothers, Harry Vinson, Charles “Chuck” Vinson, Rev. Frank Vinson, Donald Vinson and Alvin Vinson.
